"Refrigeration systems with natural refrigerants"

With the "F-Gas Regulation" (EU 517/2014), the European Union decided in March 2014 to phase out the current refrigerants.

The regulation was replaced on 11 March 2024 by regulation (EU 2024/573), which defines the gradual phase-out by 2050.

This clears the way for the use of natural refrigerants such as ammonia (R717). Carbon dioxide CO2 (744) or propane C3H8 (R290).

Natural refrigerants

  • do not pollute the environment and have little or no GWP
  • are energy efficient
  • have proven successful in many applications

Carbon dioxide CO2
Carbon dioxide is known in the refrigeration industry under the refrigeration designation R 744 and has a long tradition there, which extends well into the 19th century. It is a colorless, liquefied gas with a slightly acidic odor or taste.
Carbon dioxide has no ozone depletion potential (ODP = 0) and, when used as a closed loop refrigerant, has a negligible direct greenhouse effect (GWP = 1). It is not flammable, chemically inert and heavier than air. Carbon dioxide is naturally present in very large quantities.
Carbon dioxide (R744) has been used since the 19th century and is ideal as a refrigerant at low temperatures down to -56 ° C.

Propane C3H8
Since propane (R290) does not contribute to the greenhouse effect and causes higher performance figures, propane is used despite special safety requirements more and more frequently in heat pumps, air conditioning and refrigeration systems both in large systems and in production models in medium and small power ranges. Propane (C3H8) is one of the hydrocarbons and is also known in refrigeration as R 290. Propane is liquefied under pressure, colorless and almost odorless and has neither an ozone depletion potential (ODP = 0) nor a significant direct greenhouse effect (GWP = 3).
Thanks to its excellent thermodynamic properties, propane is a particularly energy-efficient refrigerant. Propane is available worldwide at low cost and, thanks to its ideal refrigeration properties, it is especially used in systems with low filling volumes. Propane (R290) is ideal as a refrigerant for outdoor installations.
