Phase-Down and Phase-Out of Synthetic Refrigerants
The EU has initiated a comprehensive phase-out of synthetic refrigerants to reduce emissions of climate-damaging CFCs. These regulations bring important changes for companies in the EU:
- Price development: The prices of synthetic refrigerants have risen drastically since 2014. In addition, their production will be reduced by 79% compared to 2015, which will further exacerbate the cost problem.
- Bans on use: Specifically, certain refrigerants may no longer be used from 2030. Examples:
- R404A: This refrigerant has been banned for many applications since 2020.
- R134a: In the EU, its use in new plants will be severely restricted from 2025.
- R407C and R410A: These will also be affected in the EU from 2030.
